Hi all,

I'm deciding my next non-commissioned build. I got some spalted Makore from Bob @ ASIA. Anyone use this or can you comment on it?

I also have spriped and quilted sapele, walnut, palo escrito, koa, grenadillo (sister to previous gtr), and I think (Cuban) wavy mahogany. I won that on auction here, but not sure what mahogany it is.

Terry, do you have a photo of the spalted makore? Is it sapwood that's spalted or heartwood? I've got about 500 board feet of highly figured makore in the shop and have worked with it for years, but have never seen spalted heartwood. The heartwood is very reistant to decay but sapwood could be spalted. Please post (if possible) a photo.

Larry, and we wanna see yours. I've only seen Makore one time, on a jig.

the sides have a coat of shellac. I like em a little darker like this. Maybe even a stain, but has anyone tried this? I suspect it will mottle a little (or alot) but that may accentuate it further...could be cool.

This is all I have to "experiment with" so any help is appreciated.

Oh man, I would SO use the Makore! Since this is a non-com build, go ahead and indulge your whim.

THanks Steve. I like spalted stuff. I got a lot of spalted maple from my Dad's woodpile years ago. So glad I did. It's all under12" long though...

Thanks!! Beautiful stuff!! The light color is sapwood for sure and the spalt looks to be solid with good wood fiber integrity.

Unfortunately, I'm not able to post photos of my makore 'cause I don't have a clue how to post a photo to my website and link to it. Sad isn't it?? My web guy does that stuff and I cut him wood 'cause he can't cut wood If I had a browse function no problem.

BTW. I think I have a small scrap that is makore from Bob Cefalu. (pop in here Bob..) It's a got a lot of Chatoyance. Real depth. Maybe I'll get that posted. That will HAVE to be scanned though...

Terry I would build with the makore seeing as it is not a ommission. Go ahead and have some fun. Makore sometimes called African Cherry is a fine tonewood. One word of caution: some people can have an alergic reaction so as always wear protection when sanding or sawing. It affects my nose and throat. No skin reaction. I would also use Z-Poxy for filler. I'm really not sure it's sapwood. The lighter color also appeared in the middle of 10 -15" wide boards which is not a likely place for sapwood. Some of the wood was punky and ended up in my wood burning stove. The sets I cut were nice and solid. Bobc38726.2438541667

The makore timbers are the tall red ones on the left. 15' tall and some are 21" wide fully quartersawn.

These are two figure types of several I've seen in makore. Not pictured is fiddleback figure. I'll have half a dozen sets or so at GAL. It's high in silica content and dulls tool edges quite readily, but I use only carbide tipped saw bands and jointer spirol inserts so it works fine in my shop.

Bob, I certainly wouldn't disagree with sap vs. heartwood because it's your wood for sure, but I've never seen makore heartwood spalt like that. Makore heartwood has high silica content which makes it pretty darn impervious to fungal attack. I have seen pigment colors from pale pink to wine red in makore and only have a couple timbers with sappy edges. It's beautiful stuff none the less.

Larry I also respect your knowledge of woods and I agree on the high silicon content of makore. In fact it was re-sawing makore that lead me to carbide blades after killing a TimberWolfe in one pass of Makore. I had never seen spalted makore untill I came across this batch.

heady days!

Then in '99 my brother did a 1 year course at the Univeristy in Liverpool,
coached at the academy, and had access to all training sessions at
Melwood. I visited him and got to go to Melwood and the players' lounge
after the games. Trip of a lifetime!

That's not an offensive hikack. Neat to see people connect!

so this stuff blunts tools a little? The spalting is solid and not punky, but it's probably softer than the darker brown areas.

The tap tone at this point is not impressive, but it may change when thinned down a little.

If I choose this for my next, I'll keep ya'll posted
